Understanding California Proposition 65 & Sequoia Soothe

At Sequoia Soothe, our mission is founded in science and transparency. We test every batch of our products rigorously to ensure purity and potency.

If you are browsing our website from California, or if you received a bottle of Sequoia Soothe with a "Prop 65" warning sticker, you may have concerns. We wrote this page to help explain what that warning means, why it is there, and why you can feel comfortable taking Sequoia Soothe.

What is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65 is a California law passed in 1986. Its official name is the "Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act."

The law requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase. Prop 65 is considered a "right to know" law, rather than a pure product safety law.

It is crucial to understand that a Prop 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe or in violation of any federal safety standards.

The limits set by Prop 65 are often drastically lower than limits set by the FDA, EPA, and the World Health Organization. For many elements, the Prop 65 threshold is set at a level 1,000 times lower than the level known to cause no observable effect.

Why is this warning on Sequoia Soothe?

The warning on Sequoia Soothe relates to naturally occurring trace amounts of lead.

We do not add lead to our products.

Sequoia Soothe is a natural supplement derived from botanical ingredients. Plants absorb water and minerals from the soil they grow in. Because lead is a naturally occurring element found in soil, water, and air across the globe, virtually all plant life—including organic vegetables and herbal ingredients—will contain trace amounts of it.

It is currently impossible to source many natural botanical ingredients that are totally free of these naturally occurring trace elements.

Putting the Numbers in Perspective

California's Prop 65 limit for lead regarding reproductive health is extremely low: just 0.5 micrograms (mcg) per day.

If a product exceeds that tiny amount, a warning is required in California. A daily dose of Sequoia Soothe contains approximately 0.64 mcg of naturally occurring lead—barely over the California threshold, but well within standard safety guidelines accepted elsewhere.

To put that tiny amount into perspective, compare it to healthy, common foods that absorb minerals from the soil:

  • A standard serving of boiled spinach can naturally contain roughly 0.7 mcg of lead.
  • A serving of sweet potatoes or carrots can naturally contain anywhere from 0.5 mcg to over 1.5 mcg of lead, depending on where they were grown.

A single serving of these healthy vegetables can contain more naturally occurring lead than a daily dose of Sequoia Soothe. Yet, because grocery stores are often exempt from labeling raw produce, you rarely see stickers on your vegetables.
